A warehouse has so many moving parts and so many moving people. With so much going on at any one time, it’s important to maintain proper safety standards as part of the everyday routine of each and every employee.

Working conditions for warehouse workers can be improved by a few simple steps and by regular safety inspections. This is true for all workers. Doesn’t matter if they’re forklift operators involved in materials handling at the loading dock; if they handle hazardous materials and/or racking systems; or if they work in the relative safety of the comptroller’s office. These warehouse safety tips are universal and should be universally observed.

Mishaps

But first: What sorts of mishaps are we looking to prevent in the warehouse working environment? Well, we’d like to prevent trips and slip and fall accidents. We’d like workers to internalize fire safety regulations. We want them to know how to operate fire extinguishers and other safety equipment. That’s for starters.

Some warehouse safety ideas are easier to conceive and put into action to prevent accidents than others. Want to prevent slips? Install anti-slip grips on walking surfaces. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration reports that “the fatal injury rate for the warehousing industry is higher than the national average for all industries.”

For warehousing establishments, the 10 OSHA standards most frequently included in the agency’s citations were: forklifts; hazard communication; electrical wiring methods; electrical system design; guarding floor and wall openings and holes; exits; mechanical power transmission; respiratory protection; lockout/tagout; and portable fire extinguishers

And without further ado, here are some warehouse safety tips:

  • Install guardrails and handrails for workers in elevated sections of the warehouse
  • Install and maintain catwalks, ladders, and crossovers
  • Make sure workers know where the safety shut-offs are located
  • Close areas where spills have occurred and clean up spills immediately to avoid slips and trips
  • Install stainless steel drains in the warehouse floor to eliminate sanitation problems
  • Upgrade flooring so that it’s acid-proof and constructed with microbiological control materials
  • Provide workers with appropriate protective equipment
  • Teach proper lifting techniques — whether it’s with manual handling or with a lift truck
  • Assign employees to keep the first aid kits stocked and accessible
  • Provide plenty of signage showing locations of emergency exits
